Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring! You mean the grass that the pandas in China eat? How is the world can you transform grass into a kitchen floor? I think you have been sitting in the sun too long. This is the thought that travels through our minds when we envision a panda bear sitting in the wilderness eating his bamboo supper. However bamboo, while technically listed as a grass, is probably one of the hardest woods that grow on our planet earth.

Even though there is a hole in the center of every bamboo plant, the walls of a mature bamboo plant is close to an inch in thickness. Flat strips are cut from these thick stem walls. These thin strips are then processed to remove the insect attracting starch that naturally occurs in bamboo. The bamboo is then pressed together to create flooring material. Flooring made from bamboo will probably last longer than any other types of natural wood floors.

It is super strong and very durable. Bamboo is a very rapidly growing grass which makes it able to be harvested every 3 to 7 years. Some plants grow 50, 60 or even 70 feet tall. Even after being cut off, the bamboo will regenerate itself; thus making it a truly self replenishing product.

Bamboo wood requires 5 to 7 years to reach maturity; a typical hardwood tree requires about 100 years before reaching maturity. The bamboo regenerates itself; the hardwood tree has to be replanted by people. Therefore, many forests that have been carelessly harvested have never been replanted. Our ecological system derives untold benefits from the use of bamboo for flooring material instead of stripping the land of all of our conventional hardwood trees,
